Homemade Sea Salt Butter

I have always been a fan of making things homemade.  As my children were growing up, I wanted to find projects they could help me with in the kitchen and making our own butter was a great project!  It’s fairly quick, easy and oh so tasty!  Back then, we used a mason jar and a marble to churn the butter.  Today, I make my homemade butter with my grandkids.  We have a nifty little Kilner churn that they love to crank, crank, crank!  It’s very easy for little hands to do the work.  When I’m not working with the grand-littles, I use my Kitchenaid mixer with the whisk attachment, talk about fast!  That’s the way to go my friends!  But for the sake of this blog, I’m going to give you the directions for using the hand crank churn.

 Kilner Butter Churn

Supplies needed:

Kilner Butter Churn, 2 cups heavy cream at room temperature, sea salt, ice water

This is a very simple project.  Simply pour the 2 cups of heavy cream into your churn, place the lid on and start cranking.  In about 15 minutes you will have fresh butter, and a spare cup of buttermilk!  When you begin cranking, you will see the cream begin to froth, then it will become thick and the cranking becomes harder to do when you have a solid mass surrounded by liquid your butter is done.

At this time, you will remove the butter and place into a bowl of cold ice water to help it set (prior to doing this I like to let my butter set in a strainer to let the excess liquid drip off).  You can pour the liquid into a jar and store in the refrigerator.  This is your buttermilk and it’s awesome to use for making biscuits!

After your butter has been soaking in the water for a minute or so, remove and set in a bowl.  Let any excess water run off and drain.  Now you can add your flavoring.  My favorite is sea salt, and you just add to taste.  Some other great flavors are garlic and herb and honey!  Just add your choice and mix well with a wooden spoon mashing it around to mix.  When done, form a ball and store your butter in the refrigerator in an air tight container.  Remove about 1 hour before serving to soften.

I hope you enjoyed this post and you get a chance to make some fresh butter, and some great memories with your little loves! xoxo Tammy
