BOTTLE GARLAND CANDLE CENTERPIECE

I’m so excited to share this DIY with you! Let’s talk a little bit about how it came to be. So, first and foremost, I was inspired by a table centerpiece that my friend Sarah had displayed on her instagram (click HERE to see that post). I checked out the company that sold that particular item and every time I looked, they were sold out. So I started letting the wheels turn and this is what I came up with. Obviously, I could have made one exactly like the inspo, but I wanted to give it my own farmhouse flair! The reason behind this design, is my daughters bridal shower. We are celebrating here in our home and I thought one of these would be a beautiful decor focal point. Her wedding is going to have the boho/industrial vibe so I thought this design would reflect that nicely.

This was a super easy DIY, I would say beginner level. You just need a few general tools; drill, a 1.5″ wood blade, and a pair of scissors.

Supplies needed:

  • Steel rods (found in plumbing department) 3 at 24″ long (click here for link)
  • 3 steel phalanges to fit the rods (click here for link)
  • 2 steel nipple caps for the end pipes (click here for link)
  • 1 steel Tee fitting for the center pipe (click here for link)
  • tea lights
  • twine
  • 12 amber bottles (or however many are needed for the length of your project (click here for link)
  • sandpaper
  • 1 4x6x8 piece of wood
  • stain color of choice

To begin, we took several random objects such as a hammer, a chain, a nail, the steel pipe and began beating the daylights out of this wood. This was done to distress and give an old weathered look. The result is beautiful, it looks real and old!

Next, we decided the placement we wanted for all the rods and candles. The end phalange is 1.5″ from the end of the wood piece. we centered the phalange and secured with 4 black wood screws. Next I determined the number of candles I wanted in each section, I decided to go with 5 and we spaced them with 6 inches between each candle on center and 3 inches between the center of each candle and the edge of the phalanges. We simply measured 3 inches from the phalange and made a dot then 6″ to the next dot for 5 dots then 3 inches off the last candle for the edge of the center phalange. Then we used the wood cutting blade and made the holes to hold the tea lights.

We then repeated the process for the second half. When designing this piece, I wanted a double swag of hanging bottles, and I love how this turned out. once we had all the holes drilled and made sure everything was in line, I began staining the board. I would’ve went ahead and used the saw at this point to trim the board to our desired length, but our blade was broke so it had to wait until the next day, so I moved on with staining.

I chose the color Provincial from Minwax, one of my favorite stains, click HERE for link. I usually add some weathered gray or white to weaken the color a bit, but I love the rich tone this wood took with this stain. I did not put a finishing Polyurethane on because I didn’t want it to be shiny, and I don’t plan on leaving it out in the weather.

After distressing and staining we used an electric sander and gave the whole beam a nice sanding to smooth it down. I touched up any areas with stain that were in need and then I attached the rods, they just screw into the phalange. I then screwed on the two end nipples and the center tee, then I cut a piece of twine twice the length of the beam and attached it to one end around the visible threads and knotted it, ran it though the tee and attached on the other end. Last step, use pieces of twine to hang the bottles. you can do this in any length you wish, I chose to stagger mine. I put 6 into each section.

Last, I added some dry oats to the bottles and then placed the candles. I decided I was going to decorate this for halloween by adding some flying owls I cut out with my cricket and use it for the dining room table decor, the grandkids love it! I’ve also added my PNG file for cutting the owl shapes with your circut, I used black card stock for this and attached with double sided tape.
