MICROWAVE FLOWER DRYING
My family experienced a great loss this past September when my Aunt Rita passed away. At her funeral, my uncle got her the most beautiful spray of yellow roses. At the end of the service, as is tradition, I took one of the flowers covering her casket and brought it home. I had it in a vase for several days, it was so beautiful. I knew I wanted to find a way to preserve it. I decided I would try a new method of flower drying, using a microwave. Boy, did it work well! I couldn’t believe that one minute this rose was in a vase and literally 10 minutes later it was dried.
Here’s what I used:
- wax paper
- 1 large ceramic dinner plate
- 2 small ceramic bread plates
- paper towel
- microwave
- 3 dimensional frame from Target (click here) for the frame I used
Here’s what I did:
I took the wax paper and folded it in half, a piece large enough to hold the entire flower. I laid the wrapped flower on the plate and set the 2 stacked bread plates on top. Every tutorial IU had seen used bricks, I didn’t have them so I went with something heavy and microwaveable, ceramic dishes.
I was careful to make sure the flower was laying nicely. The large rose head made a wobbly stack of dishes but it worked. I put it in the microwave for 2 minutes on high. When I opened the door, it was flat. I couldn’t believe it.
I removed it immediately from the stack and the wax paper, if you leave it to cool in the stack, it will begin to sweat and you’ll have to run it again in the microwave. I found this out the hard way. Lay your dried flower on a piece of paper towel and ensure it is dry. If you notice any dampness or moisture, just re-press and microwave in 30 second intervals until desired dryness.
Once my flower was dry, I let it set out for 24 hours before I framed it. I am so happy with the outcome, and now I have this gorgeous framed rose to remind me of my aunt and her love of yellow roses.
Until next time!
