DIY BOARD & BATTEN

What do you think? I hope you think it is as beautiful as I do! Board and Batten is a fabulous way to take an awkward space and make it pop! I added it to 2 places in my home, here in the entryway; and also in my kitchen by the stove. That was the most awkward space, but now it has some charming board and batten and it adds a nice layer of texture!

Doing board and batten yourself if so easy! It’s actually a great first time DIY project all you need is a saw, some 1×4 boards, some 1×3 boards (and a couple 1×2’s if you want to make a fancy top ledge). Grab a saw, a nail gun if you have one (or hammer and panel nails if you don’t), a tape measure, some wood filler, some sandpaper, and some paint.

First things first, measure that wall and decide how high you want your board and batten to go. We decided on just over 4 feet, we measured the length of the wall and cut our 1×4 board then nailed it in place, we did the same for the bottom with a 1×2 board. Next, measure the height from the top of the bottom board to the bottom of the top board, cut a 1×3 and place one on each end of the wall. Now decide how far apart you want the boards and cut and place them. The hardest part is working around the electric sockets. You can also use glue behind the boards but we chose not to because we didn’t want to cause damage to the drywall if we should choose to remove. We used a brad nailer and the boards are very sturdy on the wall, no we didn’t hunt for studs.

Here it is all painted and pretty (and we painted with paint the same color of our trim). We used a 1×2 and a 1×4 on top to make a nice little ledge to hold my decor. I also added these cute hooks, and, I didn’t screw them or nail them into the boards, I used VELCRO COMMAND STRIPS and they are working perfectly.

Decor made simple friends, and it makes such a statement! I hope you’ll try to add some Board and Batten to your home!
