COORDINATING A THEMED CHRISTMAS TREE

Can you even believe it’s already December? I’ve been decorating my home for Christmas since November 1, and shocker, I’m still not done! It takes so much time to get every little thing just right, and decorating 8 Christmas trees takes a little time as well.

I thought this would be the perfect time to share with you how I coordinate a themed tree. Our master bedroom is all decked out this holiday season with the beautiful Christmas color, red. In the past I’ve always done our tree with whites, but I decided to change it up this year. I had nothing red so I headed to Hobby Lobby and picked out some beautiful ornaments.

To start this process, I decided on red with accents of gold (so out of character for me). I was inspired by my moms tree theme this year which was green with gold. I helped her with some of her tree trimming and it was so sparkling and pretty I had to go with some sparkles myself.

Here’s what you do, I started with a very sparkly solid red bulb, I added a red matte bulb with some glittery gold, then I chose a glass gold with a few sparkles. Then I found some beautiful gold stars and deer, all sparkly and I added them to my mix. Next, I found some red and gold sparkly balls strung into garland. I topped it all of with a big glittery gold snowflake. It sounds kind of gawdy doesn’t it. I promise it’s not.

Doesn’t it coordinate beautifully? I just love each piece, just a little sparkle, not over the top. Once everything was on the tree, it looked amazing. Our bedroom tree is very skinny but full. So I started with wrapping the garland then I secured the large snowflake on top (I didn’t want to knock ornaments off once they were on trying to tie that snowflake down), then I began adding ornaments. The gold specialty ornaments were first, then the red sparkling ornaments, followed by the gold glass, and finally the red/gold glittery ornaments. I’m so happy with the result.

I do have a few ornament placement tips for you.

  1. Begin with the ornaments you have the fewest of, for me that was the 2 stars and the 4 deer. I placed them around the tree where they weren’t clumped together.
  2. Second, add the ornament in the dominant color, for me that was the red sparkly. You want to be able to disburse these out evenly.
  3. Add the accent color, my tree that was the gold glass ornaments. Place them evenly around the tree.
  4. Now, add your “specialty” color ornament. Mine was the red with gold glitter swirls. I placed them in the open spaces around the tree filling in all the open spots.
  5. My best tip, when adding the #2 and #3 ornaments, instead of hanging them all from the branches, push some into the fluff so they are nestled in deeper into the tree. This is a beautiful effect and it works best on trees that are very full.
  6. If decorating to the nines is your bag of donuts, don’t let anyone tell you that 2, 4, 8, 10, or even 15 trees is over the top. Celebrate in your own way in your home. The glow of a Christmas tree is magical and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else this time of year. It sets the tone and mood in your home, and a tree in every room is AMAZING.

I hope you find these tree decorating tips helpful and you enjoy your holiday decorating season. But most importantly, enjoy your family during this time of the year, and don’t forget to focus on the REASON we celebrate this wonderful holiday. God bless!
