    Things That Bring Me Joy

Happy September 1! I can’t believe how quickly this year is slipping away, and what a crazy year it has been. Did you know that today is my birthday? When I was a child, we hadn’t started school yet when my birthday rolled around, we used to wait until after labor day to start school. But I have to say, this is a fantastic time of year to celebrate your birthday! It’s starting to feel like autumn is coming, but yet it still feels like the end of summer; it is a glorious time of the year. The changing seasons are so fun to watch as they come about. I…

    Sourdough Starter

I had no idea what I was getting into. It’s a tad bit intimidating to try something new in the kitchen, especially when it closely resembles a science experiment, that you are intended to eat. But alas, I wanted to do it anyway. I enjoy a good challenge and I wanted to see how I fared in natural bread making. So in true Tammy Kate fashion, I started by reading everything I could find about sourdough starters. A couple of my favorites were The Prairie Homestead Blog and The Prairie Homestead Cookbook. I found invaluable information that Jill has shared. Also the book, Flour Water Salt Yeast was very informative…

    Faux Shiplap Fireplace DIY

When we selected our home plan to build, I immediately knew I wanted a fireplace in the gathering room. Our builder didn’t offer that option so I went on the lookout for some ideas for faux fireplaces. I found so many lovely projects on Pinterest (you can find me on Pinterest here) that I didn’t know what to do. I knew 3 things to be facts: I wanted it boxy with shiplap I wanted an electric unit that would also create heat I did NOT want a place to put a television Folks, all my research and sketching brought us here, to the faux fireplace of my dreams! To say…

    Simple Valentine’s Day Decor

February is fixing to roll in here like, “new month, who dis?” I am typically not much of a Valentine’s Day decorator, but I have added a couple pink and red pieces to ramp up the mood this year. I found this cute red throw with hearts at Home Goods, I thought it would be the perfect, bold red to make a statement. It’s fun and catches the eye quickly when set against the neutral decor, it’s the perfect pop of holiday color and it speaks volumes. For some cozy texture, I brought in these pillows from Target. They have cute tassels, neutral fabric and pink/blush stripes and they come…

    GIANT CHALKBOARD DIY

Chalkboards are for writing, drawing, communication, sharing quotes and inspiration; I almost feel like no home is complete without a chalkboard. Have you ever priced them? A nice big chalkboard can cost big bucks! So, my hubby and I decided we would build one, then we built a second for our winter home. It’s super easy, beginner level I would say. There is a short list of supplies needed: Smooth brown hardboard panel saw and miter box box knife hammer (manual or power) nails (wire 1/2″ or brads 1/2″) alligator hangers 2 sawtooth picture hangers w/nails chalkboard paint paintbrush and sponge paintbrush yard stick or tape measure corner braces 2…

    Celebrating Christmas

Despite all the chaos, our Christmas turned out awesome. I wanted to take a quick moment to talk about holiday food, the meals we serve our guests and what service method do you use? Buffet, family style, served dinner? My family get togethers are pretty big for a Christmas meal, so we do buffet style dining. It works best for allowing folks to eat, browse, graze and go back for more of whatever they like. We have a few different times to share food with loved ones. First up this year, we had Christmas Eve celebrations, when my Aunt, Uncle and cousins join my whole crew (parents, kids, grandkids). This…
