CABBAGE ROLLS

Let me tell you a secret, I don’t like cooked cabbage. Ok, thats a broad statement, I like egg rolls, and I like raw cabbage but cooked, no thanks. It stinks….BUT…. have you ever made cabbage rolls? Friend, let me say, I loved them! The cabbage is essentially tasteless, I guess that’s because they didn’t boil with the meat? I don’t know, but I know this, they are yummy and I’ve made them more than once already!

Look how beautiful these are, yes, so good! I have the recipe right here, my sister in law is and amazing cook and she makes some delightful things, so here ya go friends! Make some cabbage rolls and let us know what you think!!

Before the recipe, here are my rolling tips! this makes the cutest little cabbage rolls!!!

First….Put that little pile of meat filling just above the area where you remove the stem

Step 2: fold the 2 v flips in the bottom corners up and criss cross, the pull the tail up and hold it in the center of the meat filling.

Step 3: fold in the upper sides to make the roll the same width at the top as it is at the bottom.

Step 4: Start rolling your little cabbage roll nugget up

Step 5: And there it is! Beautiful!!

Now dump some sauce on top and bake this up!! Here’s the recipe!!

CABBAGE ROLL

From the kitchen of Tammy Kate

Ingredients

  • 1 head cabbage (pick a big one, big leaves are easier to work with)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Small onion finely chopped
  • Salt/Pepper to taste
  • 1 cup Jasmine rice
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1 beaten egg
  • Cheese of your choice for topping (Parmesan / Cheddar)
  • 1 8 ounce can of tomato sauce
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp lemon juice

Directions

  1. Make sauce. In a bowl, mix tomato sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice. Worcestershire sauce, ketchup
  2. Cook rice and set aside
  3. In a separate bowl, place egg and milk and whisk. Add ground beef (raw), cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Mix well into a meatloaf type filling and set aside.
  4. Remove core from the head of cabbage and place into a pot of salted, boiling water. Ensure submersion for 5 or 6 minutes then remove heat. Use tongs to pull out individual leaves. Take 8-10 leaves and allow to cool.
  5. Remove thick portion of stem from leaf and add ground beef mixture roll.
  6. Place a shallow layer of sauce on the bottom of your dish. Put cabbage rolls into dish snuggling them together. Pour remaining sauce on top. Cover with foil and bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
  7. Remove from oven, remove foil. Place on plate and sprinkle with cheese of choice.
  8. Enjoy.
