MY FAVORITE CROCHET WINTER HAT
I have had a lot of people ask me for the directions for my winter boggins that I crochet. It’s a fairly easy pattern, and an experienced crocheter can finish one hat in just over 2 hours. Here’s a step by step guide that will make one average size adult hat (head sizes to vary).
I use a 6mm crochet hook and a skein of 4 weight yarn. Begin with a chain of 45. Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook and in each chain until you reach the end. Chain 3 and turn. Double crochet in the back loop only in each stitch. At the end chain 3 and turn. Continue to repeat this process until you have 25 rows and your piece resembles a large rectangle. Bring the two long edges together and slip stitch the seam closed. Tie off and cut with a long tail. Thread tail into a large needle and cinch top together where you can pull it tight and knot off. Be sure to secure well before trimming yarn tail. The hat is complete, turn so seam is on the inside and cuff to fit head. You can create a yarn pom-pom to match the hat or you can attach a faux fur pom-pom.
To make a pom-pom. There are devices to help you make a pom pom but I’ve never had good luck with them. I just prefer to cut a piece of cardboard about 4 inches wide and 6 inches long. Going around the narrow way, wrap the yarn about 150 times. Carefully remove the yarn from the board and tie in the center with a piece of string. Tie it as tight as you can and leave a long double tail to attach to hat. Using scissors, Cut the loops on each end open. I go to the trash can and hold the pom pom by the string I used to tie it and I take the scissors and begin trimming down the string into an even ball. I do this by eyeballing it until the pom pom looks the way it should. Cut little amounts at a time so you don’t have to start over. Once you’ve completed this step, thread the strings into the top of the hat and tie off.
Bonus: you can sew a button into the inside top of the hat and tie your pom pom to the button, this allows for removal for washing the hat. You don’t want to put a pom pom through the washer, it will destroy it.
If you enjoy crochet, I hope you will make some fun boggins for your family and friends. They really do go that extra mile in letting your loved ones know you care!
